과거에는 기계장치나 미디어 같은 기술을 중심으로 작업했다면, 최근에는 몸으로 직접 느끼고 감각하는 쪽으로 작업의 중심이 옮겨가고 있다. 이전에는 무엇을 만들지 먼저 설계했다면, 지금은 현장에서 마주치는 대상을 따라가며 발견하는 방식에 더 가깝다.
내가 꾸준히 관심을 가져온 것은 사회나 집단이 사용하는 언어와 규칙이다. 하지만 작업 방식이 달라지면서 처음부터 관심 대상을 정해두기보다, 과정에서 우연히 마주친 것에도 시선을 돌리게 되었다. 지역을 돌아다니며 리서치하고, 근처 골동품 가게를 기웃거리다 주인에게 말을 건다. 공장에서 제작 중인 성상을 보고 그 제작 과정을 따라가기도 하고, 사람들이 자신을 소개하는 영상을 모으기도 한다.
그렇게 만난 사람과 사물, 기록을 한동안 늘어놓고 직접 만져보고 실험하며 생각한다. 무엇을 의미하는지 먼저 정리하기보다는 일단 가까이 가보고 해보는 편이다. 생각보다 몸이 먼저 움직인다.

In the past, my work centered on technology such as mechanical devices and media. More recently, however, the focus has shifted toward what I can experience and perceive directly through the body. Where I once began by designing what I wanted to make, my current process is closer to following what I encounter on site and discovering the work along the way.
I have consistently been interested in the language and rules used by societies and groups. As my working method has changed, however, I have become less inclined to define the subject of my interest in advance. Instead, I also turn my attention to things I happen to encounter in the process. I conduct research by moving through a neighborhood, wander into a nearby antique shop and strike up a conversation with the owner, follow the production process of a religious statue I come across in a factory, or collect videos of people introducing themselves.
I then spend time laying out the people, objects, and records I have encountered, handling them, testing them, and thinking through them. Rather than deciding in advance what they mean, I tend to approach them first and see what happens. My body often moves before my thoughts do.
